Mercedes Automatic Transmission Adaption process

The Mercedes Transmission Control Unit (TCU) for the 722.6... series of transmissions has the capability to adapt new values for the clutch shift clearance the filling time and pressure and friction characteristics to maintain optimal function.
When should a transmission Adaption process be performed:
  • If shift characteristics seem to be unfavorable and an effort is being made to optimize shift quality.
  • After replacement of the Automatic transmission
  • After replacement of the TCU
Important information to the transmission Adaption process
  • Each shift and each shift member has control module adaption requirements ( except the reverse clutch B3)
  • Adaption values are established during shifting with extremely light loads. The transmission then function correctly in all other driving situations.
  • Approx. eight shifts per shift member must take place within the permissible engine torque speed and transmission oil temperature allowance to effectively improve adaption values.
  • Upshift using shift selector lever is an effective method to achieve upshifts  with such light engine torque.
  • Do not use or move selector lever for: Downshift, Idle throttle
  • Engine must continue to run a minimum of ten minute after the adaption procedure to allow control module to record and store the new adaption values in memory. ( car can be either driven or at idle)
  • If engine is turned off prior to the required ten minute time interval, all new adaption values will be lost and the TCU will default to the old values.
 Requirements:
  • Transmission Oil temperature must be between 60 to 105'c
  • Air condition must be OFF
  • Vehicle must be driven with very light throttle loads.
  • Do NOT exceed 1800 rpm during shift process.
 Tips:
  • Transmission Oil temperature between 80-90'c
  • Do NOT exceed 10-15% accelerator pedal position. You can not perform adaption with heavy throttle loads or high engine torque.
  • Ideal rpm during shift moments is approx:1200-1600
